Brenn Sanford - Biography

Artist's Bio

History, Sensitivity, Sincerity, Beauty

Brenn Sanford (b. 1988, San Francisco) spent his early childhood in Sonora, California, surrounded by the oil paintings of his great-uncle, the respected Sonora artist Ed Lane (1939–2021). Lane’s work and deep love of art became a profound early influence. Though the family moved when Sanford was eight, frequent visits back to the Sierra foothills nurtured his growing appreciation for the region’s history, light, and natural beauty.

A natural talent for drawing showed itself from his earliest memories and earned early recognition in school. In 2008, a drawing course at Modesto Junior College reawakened that passion after years away from it. Yet art remained an impractical path in the eyes of others. A Christmas gift of painting supplies in 2016 reignited the spark—he fell in love with the medium and began painting seriously in acrylics in 2017, later transitioning to oils in 2021, the medium his great-uncle had mastered.

Largely self-taught, Sanford draws inspiration from Renaissance traditions, the luminous brushwork of John Singer Sargent, and contemporary plein-air painter Joe Paquet. His representational yet somewhat impressionistic work focuses on landscapes, portraits, and figures, with occasional still lifes. He particularly enjoys plein-air painting—working directly outdoors and occasionally refining pieces in the studio from memory and photo references. In 2022, he won First Place in the Merced Multicultural Arts Center’s Community Spirit exhibition for his large landscape Muir Woods.

Currently, Sanford is deeply immersed in plein air as a challenging new pursuit, focusing on California Gold Country scenes that carry personal meaning from his childhood in Sonora and years of family memories in the foothills.

Sanford lives and works in Modesto, California.
